Beginning of the organization:
A group of local youth came forwards for serving suffering magnitude that lost their lives & property during Cyclone and Matla River flood in 1987. “Love your neighbours at you love yourself “is the only aspiration for carrying relief & rehabilitation work. Since then, organization has served the poor and the marginalized section of the South Bengal population. These self-evolving initiatives encourage the local youth for working more logically towards integrated development and pushed for organization registration.
Forward march :
The organization was registered under West Bengal Society Registration Act, 1961 in 1988, Foreign Contribution Regulation Act (FCRA) in 1991, Registration u/s 12A of IT Act 1961 in 2001 and Certificate for the exemption u/s 80G(5)(VI) of IT Act 1961 in 2001. Though initial focus of the organization was immediate relief to the flood victims but today organization evolved into a premier home grown development organization. Continuous journey of past 24 years is an indication of its acceptability and social relevance, its ability to analyze and respond to vast changing socio-political realities.
Growth of the organisation:
Professional outlooks & development support initiatives helps Canning Swanirbhar in operational to the realities and milieu of South Bengal. Today Canning Swanirbhar is a development support organization working for the development of poor, vulnerable and marginalized section through its sector offices having a working strength more than 9 members headed by the secretary. Each sector office presently organization is managed by executives of personnel & finance committee members under the policy direction of Secretary. Due to work credentiality & deep rooted outlook State government & Central government given various project supports for implementation.
Canning Swanirbhar is a non-profit organisation working for the development of the unattended areas specially South 24 Parganas under West Bengal. While working in different programme area under Canning I Blocks, organization realized that chronic poverty and lack of education are the most pressing problems of the population needs to address through democratic process.
Recognition received :
Due to insecure livelihood youths, mostly illiterate and school dropouts, were engaged in criminal activities such as political crimes, luring girls into flesh trade, robbery, etc. the situation was such that it was impossible to think of any developmental project in the area. With the support of counseling intervention we are able to send back to the formal school to those youths who agreed to go back to school after initial hesitation and against strong temptation of easy earning through the unfair means. With the resource support of Ireland government & British High Commission an infrastructure were build for proving better education. With the supplementary support of Pally Unnyan Samity Baruiupur (PUS) daily meals were provided to the student under age group 6 years to 10 years formerly. From 2008 to 2017 we have been receiving the Block Grant Project from Pally Unnayan Samity Baruipur for the backward class women for their economical development as well as social awareness and ethics and mental progress. From January,2016 to 31st September 2022 We have receiving the Grant for implemented the project proposal climate change resiliencein Sundarban from CASA and BFtW, Germany. We have received the relief materials from BFtw Germany and individual some Donor for COVID-19 and Amphan response. Amazon Donatekart has supported relief materials for the 300 nos. beneficiaries of Sundarban areas for the efected the during cyclone Remal and also Amazon Donate Kart had supported the relief items and foods for 3100 fully effected families of Monsoon flooding (September 2024) in Amta Block and Udaynarayanpur block of Howrah district in West Bengal. We have organized and implemented the DRR awareness and CCDRR project in 100 schools and communities in 10 blocks in South 24 Parganas District supported by Water for People. We have also distributed the Relief kits to 4100 effected families of sundarban areas in during cyclone Remal for the supported by CASA.

Organization endeavor to demonstrate values of compassion, Justice, equity, integrity, trust and hope in and through our work. Work transparency and trustworthy is a cross cutting approach reflected in all the work. Individual honesty is the basic thrust in the transformation process.
Functional strategies that organization follows:

Present Major Intervention:
Community based health & sustainable development: Enlightened and empowered community leading fullness of life with adequate ability to make appropriate choices about their own health and feel responsible towards the health of other community members.
Basic education: Promoting community enlightenment by generating children interest in learning, acquiring life skills and strengthening people’s ability to life skill and strengthening peoples ability to read and write with understanding in order to apply acquired knowledge and skill in daily life and contribute to overall development through collective action.
Women empowerment: Strengthen the capacity of women to participate meaningfully in the decisions affecting their lives the freedom to make choices with free will and claim their choices without infringing on the rights and privileges of others and in so doing enable communities to recognize the role of women in the society.
Social Justice: Million of people suffer from discrimination and human right violation continues to be major problem. Perhaps the most prominent of discrimination against marginalized group is that tribals who constitute a large population of north Bengal. Therefore human right and social justice is a core concern of the organization.
Future Development challenges for the organization:
Poverty: Local economy is basically agro based. Due to globalization effect and competition market cost of primary materials are very high and product is not cost effective. Due to insecure source of livelihood poor and vulnerable are affecting most. Therefore livelihood of the poor and marginalized insure in terms of food, illiteracy & ill health. Discrimination of certain groups of people is widespread and in many cases has lead their exclusion from having access and control over economic resources.
Governance: West Bengal is probably the first state to introduce three tires Panchyat system. Unfortunately till days government is suffering serious obstacles to instituting better governance. Here corruption has severely impaired the effectiveness of government in implementing poverty reduction programmes.
Human right: Due to less developmental initiatives issues of discrimination against women and marginalized groups has not address adequately. Some of the formal rights recognized by law but in practice many such are not well recognize. Moreover social, religious and cultural norms are major obstacle to the empowerment of women. It is one of the challenges to protect and promote women and vulnerable section if forth coming days.
Policy Frame Work:
Administration and finance policy of the organization:
Canning Swanirbhar has a system of mutual sharing among the members directly associated with the management of the affairs of the organization on the happening in managing the overall work executions and thereby to critically review the workings and loopholes for necessary rectification inductive to the management development and in addition to that, necessary training are imparted to the key person at the staff level and base level group leaders of Mahila Mandal (Women’s Group) and Village Committee.
The top-level management of Canning Swanirbhar is its Governing Body consisting of members. The office bearers are the President, Secretary, Treasurer and the remaining four are executive members. It enjoys the general power of management, supervision and conducts the overall affairs of the organization.
Project Administrative body of the organization is its middle-level management of which the President& Secretary is the Chief Executive under whom there is a provision for administrator. These two functionaries run and administer the whole administrative system at different level.
On the programme component side, Programme Coordinator coordinates and handles all the programmes at the field level with the assistance of supervisors who are in charges of various programmes like women’s programmes, health etc. Under the supervisors there are Field Workers (FW) for implementation of field level activities as per their technical guidance. This entire process is done with consultation and knowledge of Administrator.
In the office set up there is an accountant, Computer and Data Entry Operator, Office Assistant & receptionist etc.
The set up works goes under the instruction and guidance of the Administrative body.
